Advanced German Alphabet- Double Vowels and Grouped Consonants

In this post, we are looking at the advanced features of the German alphabet. We are looking at the pronounciation of words with double vowels and grouped consonants.

Below is a table showing the different combinations of vowels and consonants that are important to learn to help correctly pronounce German words. We have also recorded a video to help you hear the correct pronounciation of these advanced German alphabet combinations. This video can be viewed at the bottom of this post.

Double Vowels

äu – Pronounced oy

eu – Pronounced oy

ai: – Pronounced i (eye)

ei: – Pronounced i (eye)

au – Pronounced ow as in How

ie – Pronounced ee

Grouped Consonants

ck – Pronounced K

ch This sound is not used in English. It’s like a soft K that’s stuck half way down the throat. It takes some getting used to and needs practice! Watch our video below to hear how this sounds.

pf – Pronounced p-f but quickly. Both letters are pronounced. Watch the video to hear it in action 🙂
