What are 2 Part German Conjunctions?
The German language has conjunctions which have two parts. But don’t worry, it’s not difficult to learn as English has two part conjunctions too 🙂
The most common German two part conjunctions are:
sowohl…als auch
weder…noch
entweder…oder
nicht nur…sondern auch
The conjunction sowohl…als auch (both…and)
Sowohl sein Bruder als auch seine Schwester wohnen in Amerika. – Both his brother and sister are living in America.
Sowohl mein Auto als auch mein Motorrad sind beide kaputt. – Both my car and my motorbike are broken.
The conjunction weder…noch (neither…nor)
Weder ich noch mein Freund haben Geld. – Neither me nor my friend have money.
Weder sein Vater noch seine Mutter unterstützen ihn finanziell. – Neither his father nor his mother support him financially.
The conjunction nicht nur…sondern auch (not only…but also)
Nicht nur er, sondern auch sie will eine Scheidung. – Not only he but also she wants a divorce.
Nicht nur Deutschland, sondern auch Frankreich wollen die Steuern erhöhen. – Not only Germany but also France want to increase the tax.
The conjunction entweder…oder (either…or)
Entweder gehen wir in die Türkei in Urlaub oder nach Zypern. – Either we go to Turkey on holiday or to Cyprus.
Entweder Ben oder Tom hat dein Auto zerkratzt. – Either Ben or Tom has scratched your car.
