What are Conjunctions in German
A conjunction is a word which links two sentences. Very common English conjunctions are “and”, “but” and “because”.
The most common German conjunctions are aber, als, da, damit, dass, denn, ob, obwohl, oder, sondern, um…zu, und, während, wenn, and weil.
Below are some examples of how the most common German conjunctions are used.
The conjunction aber (but):
Ich würde gerne in Urlaub gehen, aber ich habe kein Geld. – I would like to go on holiday, but I haven’t got any money.
Note: You can’t use “aber” after a negative to mean “not….but”. You must use “sondern” in this case.
RIGHT: Die Hose kostet nicht 20€, sondern 30€. – The trousers don’t cost 20€, but 30€.
WRONG: Die Hose kostet nicht 20€, aber 30€.
The conjunction “als” (when):
Als ich ein Kind war, wollte ich Pilot werden. – When I was young I wanted to be a pilot.
The conjunction da (as, since):
Da ich heute Geburtstag habe, muss ich nicht zur Arbeit. – Since it is my birthday, I don’t have to go to work.
The conjunction damit (so that):
Ich gebe dir das Geld, damit du dein Studium finanzieren kannst. – I give you the money so that you can finance your student loan.
The conjunction dass (that):
Ich glaube, dass du das besser kannst. – I believe (that) you can do that better.
The conjunction denn (because, since):
Wir backen für sie einen großen Kuchen, denn es ist ihr Geburtstag. – We are baking a big cake for her because it is her birthday.
The conjunction ob (if, whether):
Er wollte wissen, ob du auch ins Kino kommst. – He wants to know if you’re coming to the cinema too.
The conjunction obwohl (although/even though):
Sie aß noch ein Stück Kuchen, obwohl sie schon satt war. – She still ate a piece of cake even though she was already stuffed.
The conjunction oder (or):
Will Nadja mit ins Kino gehen oder hat sie keine Lust? – Does Nadja want to go to the cinema or can’t she be bothered?
The conjunction sondern (but):
Michael arbeitet nicht mehr bei Siemens, sondern bei Bosch. – Michael doesnt work for Siemens but for Bosch.
The conjunction um…zu (in order to):
Um eine leckere Suppe zu kochen, brauche ich viele Gewürze. – In order to cook a nice soup, I need a lot of spices.
The conjunction und (and):
Ich ging zu meiner Freundin und schaute eine DVD an. – I went to my friends and watched a DVD.
The conjunction während (while):
Sie telefonierte mit ihrer Mama, während sie das Abendessen kochte. – She was talking on the phone to her mom while she was cooking dinner.
The conjunction wenn (when, whenever):
Wenn das Telefon klingelt, sag mir bescheid. – If the telephone rings, let me know.
Wenn ich nach Hause komme, rufe ich sie an. – When I come home I will call her.
The conjunction weil (because):
Heute kann ich nicht zum Fussball spielen kommen, weil ich meinen Fuß verletzt habe. – I can’t come to football today because I’ve injured my foot.
