German Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative pronouns are words like that, this or such that are used to refer to certain things and people.

For example:
Is that tablet new?
My parents weren't happy with this product.
That's such a nice thing to say.

The German language deals with these situations with a few different words. Let's have a look at them:

dieser / diese / dieses	this, this one, that, that one
derselbe / dieselbe / dasselbe	the same, the same one
derjenige / diejenige / dasjenige	the one
jener / jene / jenes	this, this one, that, that one
solcher / solche / solches	such

These words can change depending on whether the person or thing you are referring to is masculine, feminine or neuter and whether singular or plural. It also depends on the case. Here is a table to illustrate that:

Tip
The word jene is quite old-fashioned and not often used anymore. Germans use diese instead.

The words derjenige and derselbe follow the normal der, die, das format for each case and gender. Here is a full table that illustrates each one:

Habt ihr die schönen Rosen in seinem Wagen gesehen? - Der ist später bestimmt noch mit einer seiner Frauen verabredet. ⇨ Did you see the pretty roses in his trolley? - Surely he has a date with one of his ladies later.

Meine Eltern waren nicht zufrieden mit diesem Produkt. ⇨ My parents weren't happy with this product.

Was du wirklich brauchst, Kim, ist diese stylische Schubkarre. ⇨ What you really need, Kim, is this stylish wheelbarrow.

Dieselbe Schubkarre haben wir in Schwarz. ⇨ We have the same wheelbarrow in black.

Dasselbe ist auch unserer Nachbarin passiert. ⇨ The same thing happened to our neighbour.

Ist das derjenige, der dir geholfen hat? ⇨ Is that the one who helped you?

Diejenigen, die morgen kommen, haben schon bezahlt. ⇨ The ones who'll come tomorrow have already paid.

Solche guten Freunde hätte ich auch gerne. ⇨ I would also love to have such good friends.

Adjectives

In this module we also like to teach you some useful adjectives that are normally attached to a preposition. Here is a small list:

froh über	to be glad about, to be happy about

verabredet mit	to have an appointment / date with
verwandt mit	related to
zufrieden mit	satisfied with / happy with

Example Sentences:
Ich bin echt enttäuscht von ihm. ⇨ I'm really disappointed in him.

Ich bin wirklich froh darüber, dass mein Sohn mir hilft. ⇨ I'm really happy to have my son's help.

Als ich vor ein paar Tagen traurig über meine schlechte Note war, hat Florian mir einen Strauß Sonnenblumen mitgebracht. ⇨ When I was really down a few days ago because of a bad grade, Florian brought me a bunch of sunflowers.

Das ist so typisch für Männer. ⇨ Typical men.

Der ist später bestimmt noch mit einer seiner Frauen verabredet. ⇨ Surely he has a date with one of his ladies later.
