Very common English conjunctions are \u201cand\u201d, \u201cbut\u201d and \u201cbecause\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The most common German conjunctions are <strong>aber<\/strong>, <strong>als<\/strong>, <strong>da<\/strong>, <strong>damit<\/strong>, <strong>dass<\/strong>, <strong>denn<\/strong>, <strong>ob<\/strong>, <strong>obwohl<\/strong>, <strong>oder<\/strong>, <strong>sondern<\/strong>, <strong>um&#8230;zu<\/strong>, <strong>und<\/strong>, <strong>w\u00e4hrend<\/strong>, <strong>wenn<\/strong>, and <strong>weil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some examples of how the most common German conjunctions are used.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\" style=\"clear:both;\">The conjunction aber (but):<\/h3>\n<p>Ich w\u00fcrde gerne in Urlaub gehen, aber ich habe kein Geld. \u2013 I would like to go on holiday, but I haven\u2019t got any money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You can\u2019t use \u201caber\u201d after a negative to mean \u201cnot\u2026.but\u201d. You must use \u201csondern\u201d in this case.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #009900;\">RIGHT:<\/span><\/strong> Die Hose kostet nicht 20\u20ac, sondern 30\u20ac. \u2013 The trousers don&#8217;t cost 20\u20ac, but 30\u20ac.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">WRONG:<\/span><\/strong> Die Hose kostet nicht 20\u20ac, aber 30\u20ac.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction \u201cals\u201d (when):<\/h3>\n<p>Als ich ein Kind war, wollte ich Pilot werden. \u2013 When I was young I wanted to be a pilot.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction da (as, since):<\/h3>\n<p>Da ich heute Geburtstag habe, muss ich nicht zur Arbeit. \u2013 Since it is my birthday, I don\u2019t have to go to work.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction damit (so that):<\/h3>\n<p>Ich gebe dir das Geld, damit du dein Studium finanzieren kannst. \u2013 I give you the money so that you can finance your student loan.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction dass (that):<\/h3>\n<p>Ich glaube, dass du das besser kannst. \u2013 I believe (that) you can do that better.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction denn (because, since):<\/h3>\n<p>Wir backen f\u00fcr sie einen gro\u00dfen Kuchen, denn es ist ihr Geburtstag. \u2013 We are baking a big cake for her because it is her birthday.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction ob (if, whether):<\/h3>\n<p>Er wollte wissen, ob du auch ins Kino kommst. \u2013 He wants to know if you\u2019re coming to the cinema too.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction obwohl (although\/even though):<\/h3>\n<p>Sie a\u00df noch ein St\u00fcck Kuchen, obwohl sie schon satt war. \u2013 She still ate a piece of cake even though she was already stuffed.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction oder (or):<\/h3>\n<p>Will Nadja mit ins Kino gehen oder hat sie keine Lust? \u2013 Does Nadja want to go to the cinema or can&#8217;t she be bothered?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction sondern (but):<\/h3>\n<p>Michael arbeitet nicht mehr bei Siemens, sondern bei Bosch. \u2013 Michael doesnt work for Siemens but for Bosch.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction um&#8230;zu (in order to):<\/h3>\n<p>Um eine leckere Suppe zu kochen, brauche ich viele Gew\u00fcrze. \u2013 In order to cook a nice soup, I need a lot of spices.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction und (and):<\/h3>\n<p>Ich ging zu meiner Freundin und schaute eine DVD an. \u2013 I went to my friends and watched a DVD.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction w\u00e4hrend (while):<\/h3>\n<p>Sie telefonierte mit ihrer Mama, w\u00e4hrend sie das Abendessen kochte. \u2013 She was talking on the phone to her mom while she was cooking dinner.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction wenn (when, whenever):<\/h3>\n<p>Wenn das Telefon klingelt, sag mir bescheid. \u2013 If the telephone rings, let me know.<\/p>\n<p>Wenn ich nach Hause komme, rufe ich sie an. &#8211; When I come home I will call her. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"prep-title\">The conjunction weil (because):<\/h3>\n<p>Heute kann ich nicht zum Fussball spielen kommen, weil ich meinen Fu\u00df verletzt habe. \u2013 I can&#8217;t come to football today because I\u2019ve injured my foot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are Conjunctions in German A conjunction is a word which links two sentences.
