The informal word is <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">du<\/span><\/strong> in the singular and <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">ihr<\/span><\/strong> in the plural. In the formal form both,  singular and plural, are <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Sie<\/span><\/strong>. If you want to find out more about this read our blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jabbalab.com\/blog\/956\/when-to-use-sie-du-and-ihr\">When to use Sie, du and ihr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>He, she and it \u2013 er, sie and es<\/h3>\n<p>\nIn English we mainly refer to things as <strong>it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><br \/>\nI love this book. <strong>It<\/strong> is very good.<\/p>\n<p>However, in German, <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">er<\/span><\/strong> (he, it), <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">sie<\/span><\/strong> (she, it) and <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">es<\/span><\/strong> (it) are mainly used to refer to things, animals and people. <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Er<\/span><\/strong> is used for masculine nouns, <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">sie<\/span><\/strong> is used for feminine nouns and <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">es<\/span><\/strong> is used for neuter nouns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><br \/>\nDer Film ist gut. \u21e8 <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Er<\/span><\/strong> ist gut.  \u2013 The  movie is good. \u21e8 <strong>It<\/strong>&#8216;s good.<br \/>\nDie Musik ist gut. \u21e8 <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Sie<\/span><\/strong> ist gut. \u2013 The music is good. \u21e8 <strong>It<\/strong>&#8216;s good.<br \/>\nDas Buch ist gut. \u21e8 <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Es<\/span><\/strong> ist gut. \u2013 The book is good. \u21e8 <strong>It<\/strong>&#8216;s good.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>You &#8211; man<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>The subject pronoun <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">man<\/span><\/strong> is used in the same way as we use <strong>you<\/strong> to  mean people in general. <\/p>\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Man<\/span><\/strong> kann das Auto kaufen. \u21e8 <strong>You <\/strong>can buy that car. <\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Note:<\/strong> German subject pronouns only have a capital letter when they begin the sentence. The only exception to this is the polite pronoun <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Sie<\/span><\/strong> which always begins with a capital <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">S<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><br \/>\nWie hei\u00dft <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">du<\/span><\/strong>?  \u21e8 What&#8217;s your name? (informal)<br \/>\nWie hei\u00dfen <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">Sie<\/span><\/strong>?  \u21e8 What&#8217;s your name? (formal)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr width=\"100%\" \/>\n<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s have a look at the subject pronouns in connection with the German verb <strong><span style=\"color: #de2c2c;\">sein<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 <strong>to be<\/strong>. Below you can see how this important verb is formed according to its subject pronouns. Note that \u201cSie\u201d (the formal you) and \u201csie\u201d (meaning they) are formed in the same way.
